Disco Coalition Debuts to Raise Awareness and Funds for Queer Community

Inaugural Fundraising Project Kicks off with 13 Happy Hours of Which 100 Percent of the Proceeds will Benefit Queer Non-Profits Fortifying SF and Beyond; Each Party Will Also Honor a Queer Hero

(Castro District: San Francisco, CA - February 28, 2019) Launching today the Disco Coalition is setting out to raise money and bring attention to issues and causes that impact queerkind and humankind, mobilizing when the need arises to bring awareness to relevant topics that are cause for concern or celebration in the queer community.

The concept is simple. Leveraging a telephone tree model we reach out to individuals who have expressed interest in participating in the Disco Coalition. We share a concept with them to raise funds and awareness around a specific cause or issue. Participants then opt-in based on their interest and availability. A common thread is that all of our events will raise money for queer fortifying charities.

“Think of the Disco Coalition as a bat signal for queerkind,” said co-founder Aaron Wessels. “Instead of five promoters throwing parties across town, for the same cause,  the Disco Coalition will shoot up a flare to combine forces and drive people to one event, or a series of events, as is the case with our first project launching in March.”

This first project’s sole focus is to raise money and awareness for queer non-profits and showcase truly inspiring queer heroes, living and dead, that deserve to be celebrated. It will be a series of 13 happy hours at the Lookout with 100 percent of the proceeds from 5-8 pm benefiting a queer non-profit.  Titos Vodka will be matching the monies raised, up to $1,000, for each of the 13 events.

For this first project, the team behind the Lookout offered their space and profits to raise money for charity. This offer sparked a bigger conversation around forming a guerrilla network of nightlife superheroes, that could quickly take formation, pulling parties and campaigns together whenever we need to raise money/awareness for important causes. With this, the first seed of the Disco Coalition was planted and our first project was born

“In an era dominated by social media, I wanted to use the physical platform granted to me through the Lookout for activism to strengthen the community here and foster positive change,” said co-founder Chris Hastings co-founder. “Historically gay bars in this country have acted as a keystone for the community; whether that be for celebrating, socializing, or activating. I wanted to honor that legacy and simultaneously build upon it with something that could live beyond a single charity event at a gay bar.”

Each Friday, from March 29th - June 17th, the Disco Coalition Happy Hour project will feature a beneficiary, musical talent, a slew of hosts and a queer hero to be honored.  Moving forward, we see future events coming together in an organic way on an as-needed basis. Potentially on a national level, someday.
